Bangladesh Health Professions Institute (BHPI), the academic institute of Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) was established in 1992. The prime aim of BHPI is to produce skilled health professionals to serve those requiring treatment and rehabilitation. The health professionals especially Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech & Language Therapists are very few to care for those with a disability due to non-communicable disease or disorder. BHPI started its journey by offering Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Assistant courses. Due to the desperate need of health professionals BHPI started the Diploma in medical technology courses in 1995, affiliated to the State Medical Faculty of Bangladesh and Bachelor courses in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy in 1999 and Speech & Language Therapy in 2004 which are affiliated to the University of Dhaka with the administrative approval of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
To ensure the development of the professions and their education BHPI started the Master of Physiotherapy program in 2013 and the Master in Rehabilitation Science program, with the support of the SAARC Development Fund, where students from the SAARC countries have been studying since 2014. It is hoped that the BHPI will also start the Bachelor program in Prosthetics and Orthotics very soon. The work of BHPI is widely recognised in the region and I believe it will continue in the future.
